Ever since I started my MA course in 2010, at Wolverhampton University, I have tried to find new ways to do photography
, applying interdisciplinary structures to my work and building my projects through sculptural installations. This has led me to branch out and to try and explore relational aesthetics, and the way I could engage visitors in a wider social experience, sometimes of a photographic nature, but sometimes not.
My first attempt is”The woman in red (three degrees)”, a filing cabinet with hand made labels relating to an alternative view of life’s priorities. You can read the artist statement here.
My second attempt is “Homage to Anoia ” (a playful nod to Terry Pratchett). It consists ina small bathroom cabinet whose drawer isfilled with various objects. The name of the game is to rattle the drawer, then to open it gently to reveal a new configuration. This is, to my mind, a more photographic object (it was certainly designed as such anyway). Please read the rationale here.
Lastly, I have built a final piece, made out of a 3×2 meter board, 62 nails, ropes and mountaineering hooks and a sheet of muslin. This was an attempt at showing the photographic process through freezing the moment and keeping an environment in a state of tension, between one moment and the next.
I am still taking pictures and exploring various issues with my typewriter. Nonetheless, I found it was quite interesting and invigorating not to get stuck in one discipline and to experiment with various ideas.
